Walking Stick Height & Sizing Guide: How to Measure Correctly
A walking stick that is too tall forces your shoulder into an unnatural elevation, causing upper back strain. A stick that is too short causes you to stoop forward, compromising lumbar posture. Follow our craftsman guide to determine your ideal length.
The Standard Wrist-to-Floor Measurement Rule
- Wear your normal walking shoes: Shoe heel thickness (typically 0.5 to 1.5 inches) directly alters your floor-to-palm distance.
- Stand upright on a flat surface: Relax your shoulders and let your arms hang naturally at your sides with a comfortable, slight bend at the elbow (approximately 15 degrees).
- Measure from floor to wrist joint: Have a partner measure vertically from the floor up to the crease where your wrist bends backward (the radial styloid bone).
- Your measurement is your cane height: This distance, measured in inches or centimeters, corresponds to the total height of the cane from the rubber base ferrule to the top crest of the handle.
General Height vs Cane Length Reference
| User Height (Feet & Inches) | User Height (cm) | Recommended Cane Length |
|---|---|---|
| 5' 1" – 5' 4" | 155 – 163 cm | 33 – 34 inches (84 – 86 cm) |
| 5' 5" – 5' 8" | 165 – 173 cm | 35 – 36 inches (89 – 91 cm) |
| 5' 9" – 6' 0" | 175 – 183 cm | 37 – 38 inches (94 – 97 cm) |
| 6' 1" and above | 185+ cm | 39 – 40 inches (99 – 102 cm) |
