How to Clean, Oil & Season a Wooden Chopping Board

A seasoned hardwood cutting board made from mature Sheesham heartwood can easily last decades when maintained properly. Because hardwood is an organic fibrous material, a simple monthly oiling regimen protects the grain from moisture intrusion and prevents hairline drying cracks.

The 3 Essential Daily Washing Rules

❌ Never Use a Dishwasher

High heat cycles and prolonged standing steam expand the wood cells rapidly, causing end-grain joints to separate and timber to crack.

❌ Never Soak or Submerge

Never leave a wooden board in a sink full of water. Wash both sides with warm water and mild soap under running water, then rinse promptly.

✅ Dry Standing Vertically

Always dry your board upright on its edge so airflow reaches both sides evenly, preventing warping caused by uneven moisture evaporation.

Monthly Oil Seasoning: Step-by-Step

  1. Ensure the board is completely dry: Allow the board to air-dry for at least 12 hours after washing before applying oil.
  2. Use Food-Grade Pure Mineral Oil: Never use culinary cooking oils (like mustard, olive, or vegetable oil), which turn rancid over time and produce sour odors. Use odorless USP food-grade mineral oil.
  3. Apply generous coats to all surfaces: Pour oil generously onto the surface and spread evenly across top, bottom, and edges using a lint-free cloth or paper towel.
  4. Allow overnight absorption: Let the timber absorb the oil for 4 to 8 hours. Wipe away any excess oil standing on the surface with a dry cloth.
  5. Optional Beeswax Seal: Finish with a natural beeswax wood butter once every 2–3 months to create a moisture-repellent barrier.

Natural Stain & Odor Removal (Garlic & Onion)

If your cutting board has absorbed persistent aromas from onions, garlic, or spices, sprinkle coarse sea salt over the board and rub vigorously with a cut lemon half. The citric acid neutralizes odors while the salt lifts deep-seated residue. Rinse with warm water, wipe dry, and apply a light coat of mineral oil.
